10 Paradoxes of creative people

These are 10 paradoxes characters by Mihaly:

1. Creative people have a great deal of physical energy, but they’re also often quiet and at rest.

2. Creative people tend to be smart yet naive at the same time.

3. Creative people combine playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.

4. Creative people alternate between imagination and fantasy, and a rooted sense of reality.

5. Creative people trend to be both extroverted and introverted.

6. Creative people are humble and proud at the same time.

7. Creative people, to an extent, escape rigid gender role stereotyping.

8. Creative people are both rebellious and conservative.

9. Most creative people are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.

10. Creative people’s openness and sensitivity often exposes them to suffering and pain, yet also to a great deal of enjoyment.

From Creativity: The Work and Lives of 91 Eminent People, by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, published by HarperCollins, 1996.

As we can see on the explanation above about some kinds of creative people, the fact is creative person is made, not born. A person who is not creative at all will be different when he try to think out of the box and look arround then find something new and be creative.

Creativity isn’t a big deal at all actually. It’s like our breath,  because it’s just a part of who we are. Some of us don’t realize this. People who say, “Oh, I’m not creative,” or “I don’t have a creative bone in my body,” it sounds like they’re trying to convince themselves of something, rather than telling themselves the truth.

I like point 4 which states that creative people alternate between imagination and fantasy, and a rooted sense of reality. For me, this is the key of being creative because without imagination and fantasy, someone will never think out of the box will will stuck to his old mind.

Imagination, also called the faculty of imagining, is the ability of forming mental images, sensations and concepts, in a moment when they are not perceived through sight, hearing or other senses. Imagination helps provide meaning to experience and understanding to knowledge; it is a fundamental facility through which people make sense of the world (source : wikipedia)

Fantasy is a genre that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting. Many works within the genre take place on fictional planes or planets where magic is common (source: wikipedia)

From that two words above, creative person can be made. Creativity is a mental and social process involving the discovery of new ideas or concepts, or new associations of the creative mind between existing ideas or concepts. Creativity is fueled by the process of either conscious or unconscious insight (source : wikipedia)

Creative is how to imagine something new from a fantasy and make it becomes true. That’s what creative means, and everybody can be creative when they try to make themself become a creative person.
